So, um, I finally decided to tackle putting up some shelves in my garage yesterday—seemed simple enough, right? Well, as I’m drilling holes and trying to make sure everything’s level (you know how it goes), I notice the wall sounds kinda hollow in one spot. Weird, because it’s an exterior wall, so I got curious and decided to poke around a bit more. Long story short, I ended up making a slightly bigger hole than planned (oops!) and found a small, dusty metal box hidden behind the drywall.

I haven’t opened it yet because, honestly, I’m a bit creeped out. It could be anything from a previous owner’s forgotten stash of baseball cards to some kind of secret spy stuff—who knows! Thought it’d be fun to see what you all think might be inside before I crack it open. Anyone else ever find something wild hidden behind a wall? Or wanna take a guess what’s in the box?

Wow, that’s quite an unexpected discovery. Kudos for investigating further—I know from experience that hollow-sounding spots can be tricky and sometimes misleading. Your cautious approach is understandable; opening unknown containers hidden behind drywall can indeed feel a bit eerie.

Considering the box is metal and dusty, it might’ve been placed there intentionally a long time ago. Perhaps it’s a time capsule or some forgotten documents left by a previous homeowner? I’ve read about people finding old property deeds, family heirlooms, or even vintage tools stashed away during renovations. Given your description, I’d lean toward something personal or sentimental rather than anything sinister.

On a technical note, since you’re already doing DIY work, make sure to check around the opening you created for any signs of moisture damage or structural issues. Sometimes hollow spots can indicate insulation gaps or previous repairs, so it’s worth taking a closer look just to be safe.

In any case, your shelving project certainly took a fascinating turn. Whatever you find inside, it’s a great story to share later. Good luck, and keep us updated on what you discover!

Agreed, could definitely be something sentimental. My neighbor once found an old diary hidden behind wallpaper—turned out to be pretty interesting. Hopefully yours is just as intriguing… keep us posted!

Interesting anecdote about the diary discovery—makes me wonder about the preservation conditions behind wallpaper. Humidity and temperature fluctuations could really deteriorate paper-based items over time.

If it turns out to be documents, do you think they’d still be readable after being sealed away? Curious if anyone has experience with restoring old papers found in similar hidden spots…

Interesting point regarding document preservation conditions. From my experience, metal boxes can provide reasonable protection against humidity and temperature fluctuations if properly sealed, although paper degradation depends heavily on the initial environment and sealing quality. If the box was airtight, contents might still be intact and readable. I haven’t personally dealt with restoration, but archival-grade storage typically involves controlled humidity to maintain paper integrity. Curious to see how well this particular find has held up.
